Start-Up Funding for VNU-Association Research
The presidents and vice chancellors confirmed this initiative of the VNU Working Group Research at their general meeting on the 26th January 2018 in Oldenburg. The goal is to initiate new interdisciplinary research alliances, strengthen alliance synergies in regards to research and to use this to sharpen the VNU research profile and to make researching in this alliance more evident. Meetings, workshops or conferences, held to exchange information and to enhance research cooperation throughout the alliance are some examples of activities which are to be funded. Project proposals for the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) are at the focus of the initiative.
The total sum available for this measure is €50,000. Academics interested in the programme can submit their Funding Application Forms at any time to the office of the Association of North German Universities.

Who is eligible for funding?
All Ph.D. graduates employed at one of the member universities of the Association of North German Universities can apply for funding. The VNU partners are the University of Bremen, the University of Greifswald, the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, the University of Hamburg, the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, the University of Lübeck, the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and the University of Rostock.
What is eligible for funding?
Funding is available for planning activities for the preparation of proposal calls for research in alliance with the VNU partners (meetings, workshops, conferences etc.). An idea for a joint research project proposal from partners from at least two VNU universities is thus a precondition for the granting of funding. Project proposals for the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) are at the focus of the initiative.
How will the projects be selected, which are to be funded?
The VNU’s Working Group Research will jointly decide which projects to fund. Beneficiaries will be informed of their grants subsequently.
How much funding is available?
Funding is available for up to €5,000. Generally, funding can be granted for labour and material costs needed for the realisation of the intentions, provided they are in accordance with the respective budgetary legal requirements. Partners, not part of the VNU, cannot be funded. Each VNU university can submit a maximum of two proposals. Financed activities should be completed within six months following the commencement of funding. The total budget amounts to €50,000. An extension of this initiative after 2019 is possible following an evaluation of this second phase.
How will the funds be transferred?
The funds will be transferred from the VNU office at the University of Greifswald to the beneficiary university, prior to the commencement of the activities. The accounting for the measure is to be carried through by the beneficiary with the respective university administration. After the activities have been completed, money not spent is to be refunded to the VNU office.

What happens if the applicant leaves one of the partner universities?
If, during the funded period of time, the applicant moves to a different institution, not part of the Association of North German Universities, the VNU office and the member university concerned muss be informed immediately about who is going to take over the coordination of the project.
