Building of a nationwide research network and intensification of the exchange of research initiatives.
Origin of the Association
As a main task of the networking, the common implementation of evaluation procedures for subjects was defined with the foundation of the association in 1994. Thereby, the member universities from four federal states responded to the emerging public demands for greater transparency and quality control in studies and teaching at the beginning of the 90s. With the conception and implementation of the evaluation procedures, unique standards and criteria were developed that built upon the international and national experiences in quality assurance and quality check.
In 2008, the presidents and rectors agreed on a realignment of the cooperation. In place of the evaluation procedures, the project-related work came to the fore, particularly with re-gard to the quality increase in studies and teaching.
For now, the Association of North German Universities developed increasingly to a University policy forum that wants to promote the dialog with the science management among other things. The association got stronger by the realignment to the character of a network and opens the participating rectorates and chairmanships the possibility, among other things, to vote with regard to decisions of the German Research Association (GRA) and the German Rectors’ Conference (GRC) and to exchange central questions of the University policy sys-tematically.
In addition to the promotion of quality of studies and teaching, research cooperation should also shift into the focus of the association in the future. Therefore, the members of the North Association agreed in September 2014 about the respective research centres to join their research initiatives in a close exchange, use synergetic effects and strengthen the study and research locations in Northern Germany with a common research network.
